The opera "La Quintrala" by Lars Graugaard

Lars Graugaard is a composer, flautist and lecturer. He holds a Diploma in flute-playing from the Royal Danish Academy of Music, and he's self-taught as composer with more than 150 compositions in all genres and performances in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. He has also composed incidental work for stage and cinema, and he has recorded several CDs as composer and as flautist for dacapo/Marco Polo, Tutl, Classico, Centaur, EMI, SONY Classical, CBS, and others.

Commissions for performances in the near future include the Paragon Ensemble 2005 (Scotland), Reykjavik Arts Festival 2005 (Iceland) and Piano Possible for the Munich Film Festival 2005 (Germany). He is commissioned to make a sound/video installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art 2005 (Denmark).

Mr. Graugaard’s opera 'La Quintrala' for 5 singers and interactive computer was premiered September 2nd, 2004 in Copenhagen. It was a joint, EU-sponsored commission from Danish, Swedish and German opera companies with performances in ao. Copenhagen, Piteå, Hannover and Berlin during the fall of 2004. His first interactive opera, 'The Escape', based on characters from tales by Hans Christian Andersen, was premiered May 3rd, 2002 by The Fiona Opera in Andersen's native city of Odense (Denmark).

He has lectured and given workshops at ao. June In Buffalo, New York University, Juilliard School
of Music, Columbia University, Florida International University, SUNY Buffalo University, Brandeis University (all USA); Rotterdam Conservatorium (Holland), Oldenburg University (Germany), Rubin Academy of Music, Jerusalem, Israel; Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts; The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Sonology Department, Kunitachi College of Music, Tokyo, Japan; Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Sydney University, Australia; Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen, Denmark; The School of Media Arts, Copenhagen; the Danish Library School, Copenhagen; ACOF Young Composers’ Orchestra Workshop, Australia.

Mr. Graugaard was composer-in-residence with Odense Symphony Orchestra 1997-99, Artistic Director of the ISCM World Music Days 1996, Copenhagen September 12-17 1996, and Associate Professor of Interactive Performance at Carl-Nielsen-Academy of Music (Denmark) 1999-2004, where he developed a three-year master-level course in digital media. He is presently Lecturer at Aalborg University Esbjerg's department of Software and Media Technology and since 1999 treasurer of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM).

Concerning his important opera "La Quintrala", her real name was Catalina de los Ríos Lísperguer, and she belonged to the prosperous Lísperguer family, whose main ancestor was Peter Lisperg (or Pedro Lisperguer), a German conqueror in Chile, protected by the emperor Charles V, with whom he traveled in his youth to southern Germany and the Netherlands and later on developed a prominent career in the colonial Peru and Chile.
