The Unknown Years of Pedro Lísperguer in Spain and His Journey to the Conquest of Chile

Artistic reconstruction of Zafra Castle-Palace, where Pedro Lísperguer
lived for a decade before departing for England

An Almost Forgotten Period in the Life of a Conquistador

Pedro Lísperguer is remembered as one of the most influential conquistadors in the colonial history of Chile. Yet few people know about the decade he spent in Spain before departing for the New World—a formative period filled with learning, strategic alliances, and experiences that would shape his future in America. Recent research reveals that, between 1545 and 1555, this young German absorbed not only the power of the imperial networks but also the humanist spirit of the Spanish Renaissance, a legacy that would accompany him throughout his life in Chile.

From Worms to the Iberian Peninsula: A Decisive Journey

Born in Worms around 1530, Pedro Lísperguer arrived in Spain after accompanying Emperor Charles V and the Count of Feria through southern Germany and the Low Countries. During this journey, he witnessed the political complexity of the Holy Roman Empire, the religious tensions caused by the Protestant Reformation, and the intricate workings of imperial diplomacy. This early contact with the Emperor's court opened the doors of Andalusia , the heart of Spanish power and the principal departure point for expeditions to the Americas.

Ten Years in the House of Feria: More Than Military Training

Between 1545 and 1555, Pedro lived under the protection of the influential House of Feria , in Montilla and Zafra. There he learned the arts of warfare, diplomacy, and courtly etiquette. Yet his years in Spain represented far more than military training—they were an encounter with Renaissance culture .

In the libraries and literary gatherings of the nobility, Lísperguer read or heard the works of:

  • Jorge Manrique , whose reflections on glory and the fleeting nature of power left a lasting impression.

  • The Marquis of Santillana , who introduced Italian humanism into Castilian poetry.

  • Garcilaso de la Vega , the ideal Renaissance gentleman, equally skilled with the sword and the pen.

This exposure provided him with a solid education in rhetoric, philosophy, history, and the classical humanities , an uncommon intellectual background among the conquistadors who would later sail to the Americas. In Spain, Pedro acquired far more than a license to travel to the New World; he gained intellectual and symbolic capital , which would prove essential in establishing the prestige and authority he later enjoyed in Chile.

Networks of Power and Imperial Licenses

His decade in Spain was also the period during which Lísperguer built the network of political connections that would prove decisive in securing his passage to the Americas:

  • He established close ties with the Count of Feria and other leading Spanish nobles, who endorsed his German noble lineage.

  • He joined Philip II's royal entourage on its journey to England , where he witnessed high-level diplomacy at first hand during one of the most significant political events of sixteenth-century Europe.

  • He obtained an exceptional royal license granted by Charles V , authorizing him to travel to the Indies "notwithstanding his being German and regardless of any provision to the contrary," a privilege reserved for men who enjoyed the Emperor's personal confidence.

Without those ten formative years in Spain, Pedro Lísperguer would almost certainly have lacked both the authorization and the influential connections necessary to undertake the expedition that would leave a lasting mark on Chilean history.

From a Young German Nobleman to a Conquistador with Aristocratic Prestige

When Pedro Lísperguer departed for the New World in 1555, he was no ordinary German adventurer. He had become a young nobleman educated in the traditions of Spanish Renaissance humanism, supported by influential courtly networks and enjoying the confidence of Emperor Charles V and his son Philip II.
That decade in Spain transformed him into a man fully prepared to navigate the complex political and social realities of the Spanish colonial world:

  • With the authority of a conquistador whose status had been legitimized by the Crown.

  • With the prestige of a cultivated noble lineage, reinforced by family tradition and heraldic recognition.

  • With a political and cultural outlook that successfully combined warfare, diplomacy, and humanistic learning.

Conclusion: The Missing Link in the History of the Lísperguer Family

The ten years that Pedro Lísperguer spent in Spain constituted the crucial link connecting his German origins with his destiny in Chile. There he learned the mechanisms of imperial power, received a solid education in Renaissance humanism, and secured the royal endorsement that enabled him to become one of the most influential conquistadors in the history of Spanish America.

Understanding this formative period means recognizing that the history of the Lísperguer family did not begin in America, but rather in the aristocratic halls of Andalusia, the libraries of the Spanish Renaissance, and the political networks of an empire where the pen, the spoken word, and the sword were inseparable instruments for forging a name that continues to inspire fascination and legend to this day.

CHILE HISTORY: SPANISH HISTORY: LIBRARIANS ALERT!

The Lisperguer Wittemberg´s: a German
family in the heart of the Chilean culture

The German family Lísperguer, protected by Carlos V, and of great success in the 16th and 17th Century colonial Chile and  Peru, has aroused great media attention, becoming a real social phenomenon. Of it and its famous literary topic "la Quintrala" (the Chilean Quijote) endless studies have been done from as different scopes as sociological, psychological, criminal, ethnographic, genealogical, literary, feminist... exteriorized in turn in hundreds of expressions such as articles, monographs, doctoral theses, essays, novels, conferences, radio programs, documentaries, television series, films, plays and even operas ... The history of the Lísperguer family represents a fusion of nobility and mestizaje, oppression and freedom, social climbing and altruism, heroism and perversion, religion and paganism, esoterism and idolatry, subversion of the ethical codes of a society, inversion of established values and many more that are already part of an avid collective imagination.

In this new research carried out by the experienced researcher Daniel Piedrabuena, many false idols and superstitions erected around this family, propagated with vigor from the colonial period, are being demythologized, providing new evidence about their origin in Germany, which are a revealing premiere in a specially sensitive matter to the national culture. At the same time, the knowledge that it offers us about its Hispanic cousins, "the Wittemberg´s," enriches our field of vision and allows us to understand, wrapped up in good arguments, the true nature of this family. From it derives the Marquess of Valdeflores, an iconic figure of the Spanish Enlightenment also focuses on many international studies. In conclusion, all this new material, the result of many years of arduous research in the most accredited archives of Spain, opens the door to a wide-ranging debate on the idiosyncrasy of this family, thus responding to an incessant clamor for understanding a mystery, of enormous repercussion and seduction, that still convulse in a significant way the thought and the intellectual minds of our time.

The German conqueror
Pedro Lisperguer Wittemberg

When Pedro Lísperguer Wittemberg arrived in America he did so with imperial support: "Notwithstanding that it is German and any provision to the contrary", following the words of Emperor Charles V. Began that way a powerful lineage, especially in Chile and Peru, that had remarkable protagonism in XVI and XVII centuries, linking with several noble titles. From this family descends "la Quintrala," a highly mythical figure and one of the most important literary topics of Chilean culture, which is studied internationally.

A new and surprising research has allowed knowing the whole
pre-American stage of the conquistador. In a passionate account we will explore his German past, his travels with the Emperor for southern Germany and the Netherlands, his stay in Spain with the Counts of Feria, his trip to England to attend the wedding of Philip II and Maria Tudor , the political situation of the moment and hundreds of other things... non-stop curiosities that lead us to the sublimation of a myth, which before its new scenarios acquires new visions of modernity.

colonial family of Chile revolutionizes
 Chilean historiography

Take advantage of this wonderful fifteen-year research in the main libraries and archives of Spain. The Lisperguer Wittemberg's were a prominent German family, protected by Emperor Charles V, who thrived spectacularly in Peru, Chile, and Spain. From this family derives Catalina de los Ríos Lísperguer, nicknamed "la Quintrala" the main literary topic of Chile, their particular Quijote, with many repercussions on their culture. You may access this work in this link  https://www.books2read.com/u/3RBjGD

This work, acclaimed by many academies and scholars, has been divided into two volumes: "Los Lísperguer Wittemberg: una familia alemana en el corazón de la cultura chilena" and "El conquistador alemán Pedro Lísperguer Wittemberg." This new research of the first colonial family of Chile may enrich and enhance the knowledge of all people interested in these exciting subjects.

Along with the well-known family success in Spanish America,   new documents found in Spain have made possible to advance considerably in what was known about this famous family, its development, its relations, its possessions and especially interesting, everything concerning its origin.

Thanks to this, today we can have a well-formed idea of the origin and idiosyncrasy of this important colonial family, the source of many cultural relations in literature, the performing arts, history, social sciences, and even popular culture. Don´t miss it!

An exceptional case: a very special conqueror

As a way to understand the idiosyncrasy of the family and its later role in America, it is vital to read about the experiences of the conqueror Pedro  Lísperguer in Europe, near the emperor and his son Philip and other courtiers:
